TRADITIONAL EAR-NOSE-THROAT MEDICINE
We determine hearing deficiencies with tone and speech audiometry. With the tone audiometry the test person wears headphones and hears tones in different frequencies. This allows us to determine the auditory threshold of each ear individually and detect illnesses of the ossicular chain or the auricular nerve.
Voice audiometry allows us to determine how spoken language is understood. A loss of the speech intelligibility can be identified in percentage. Hearing well and correctly is an important part of communication. In order to determine if a hearing aid is necessary, tone and speech tests are essential. According to the different medical cases, additional hearing tests can be taken.
BERA is a method of objective hearing test without the cooperation of the patient. The electric impulses of the acoustic nerve are measured via electrodes placed on patient’s head. Any abnormalities in the conductivity of the acoustic nerve give indirect indications on any disease of the central auditory system in the brain.
The ear is a sensory organ that is capable of increasing single tone pitches and lowering others. This allows us to understand the person opposite in a loud environment. When measuring otoacoustic emissions, tones of different frequencies are played in each ear. A healthy ear will reflect the tones via the hair cells of the cochlea. These reflections are measured and give information on the functioning of the inner ear.
There are many medical disorders that can cause dizziness. Apart from low blood pressure, spinal problems or nerve diseases, the equilibrium organ inside the ear is also often the cause of dizziness. In order to determine the cause, we need to check the equilibrium organ in different ways. We create dizziness by means of positional and impulse tests, which we then can measure and compare with a standard value. A different method is caloric testing, where warm water is washed into the auditory canal. This causes a significant nystagmus (involuntary eye movement). The lack of nystagmus is a sign of a dysfunctional equilibrium organ. Only if the exact source of dizziness is determined, is a successful therapy possible.
Ultrasound diagnostics of the head and neck area offers a radiation-free imaging procedure. In this procedure, diseases of the throat organs, thyroid gland, salivary glands and paranasal sinuses can be recognised at a very early stage.
Bright, modern optics allow insights into the human body. Endoscopic examinations also play a large role in modern otolaryngology.
We perform endoscopic examinations in the nose, paranasal sinus, parynx and larynx area. During the paranasal sinus endoscopy, a thin, stiff endoscope is inserted into the nose in order to detect or exclude any anomalies. Through magnification in the laryngoscope, any abnormalities of the larynx, vocal chords or oesophagus entry are detected.
